How do Essential Oils Help Sleep?
Essential oils have a psychological effect on our mind, body, spirit wellness.
While essential oils popularity has become somewhat trendy in many ways, using essential oils was practiced by our ancestors for thousands of years.
Current research shows that using essential oils can produce sedative effects which then help us fall asleep peacefully and calmly.
I use essential oils to calm my mind, still my thoughts, and create inner peace in my mindfulness work. I also use these for evenings and bedtime to do the same.
How to Use Essential Oils for Sleep
Mindfulness and rituals are my favorite way of using essential oils for sleep. I’ll explain what I mean.
My kids begin to go to bed at 8 pm (my teens at 9 pm), and so by around 7 pm, I begin to create calmness in my home with essential oils.
Each of my kids has a diffuser in their rooms, and I have two in our main living space (our space is an open layout, so there’s one in the living room and one in the kitchen/dining area).
I recommend using 3-5 drops for every 3 oz of water. However, when it comes to making intentional essential oils blends, I recommend going with your senses on how many drops you need.
You’ll find that you instinctually know how many drops of essential oils you should add to the blend you’re making over time.
In my evening ritual, right after dinner, I go about each room, add their sleep blends in the diffusers, and then do the diffusers in the living spaces. Then, finally, I begin to soften the home’s lights, draw the curtains and play soothing, relaxing music.
By this time, the children have showered and are doing transitional activities before bedtime. By the time bedtime comes, they are ready to enjoy their sleep, and I begin my winding down rituals and head to bed about an hour after they do.

Are diffusers good for sleep?
I adore having diffusers. A good diffuser will have a setting that diffuses the essential oil for some time, then turns it off for a while before it runs again.
You want to avoid running a diffuser non-stop at night, as some essential oils can have the opposite effect used continuously for too long.
For example, while Lavender essential oil is relaxing when used in an off/on diffuser setting, but it can agitate you when used continuously.
So the best diffusers will have settings for night mode or a setting that allows the essential oil to diffuse on/off mode.

Creating a Bedtime Oasis
Creating your own essential oil blends for sleep is a natural way to ensure a restful night’s sleep, tailored to your personal preference.
Among the best essential oils for this purpose is Lavandula angustifolia, or lavender oil, known for its ability to soothe sleep problems and promote a good night’s rest.
Another great oil is Vetiver oil, which, with its warm aroma, helps to ground the mind for deep sleep.
When using essential oils topically, it’s crucial to dilute them with a carrier oil, such as jojoba oil or coconut oil, to prevent skin irritation.
Jojoba oil is a favorite among many for its skin-soothing properties, making it an excellent choice for a nighttime massage oil blend.
For best results, consider adding a few drops of lavender essential oil to your carrier oil for a calming bedtime routine.
For those who prefer aromatherapy, using an essential oil diffuser blend with cedarwood oil can enhance feelings of stress relief and aid in getting enough sleep.
Cedarwood’s woody scent pairs well with the sweet scent of Ylang Ylang essential oil, creating a diffused blend that promotes uninterrupted sleep and a better night’s sleep.
Essential oil diffusers are the most popular ways to enjoy the benefits of aromatherapy, allowing for the release of pure essential oils into the air for a good night’s sleep.
Remember, the best essential oil blends for sleep are the ones that work well for your unique needs.
Whether you’re creating a spray bottle blend for your linens or using a roller bottle for topical application, the key is to start with a few drops and adjust according to your personal preference.
Always keep these potent oils out of reach of children and consult medical advice if you have a medical condition.
Integrating these practices into your daily routines can help you achieve a deep sleep and wake up refreshed the next day.
