6 Steps for Self-Care
The most simple ways to care for your body, mind, and spirit are effortless. Let’s go through these.
1. Meditation
Start simply by taking five minutes each day to sit comfortably, become aware of your breathing, breathing comfortably. and using kinetics or visualization in your mind to relax more and more. Become aware of what you feel, see (in your mind) and sense. And then once done, journal it.
If you have crystals, hold them in your left hand (your receiving hand) while meditating.
2. Take a Bath
Use some Epsom salt with a few drops of any of the essential oils mentioned, such as Lavender or Ylang Ylang (I love baths with Ylang Ylang!).
Draw water in a temperature you are comfortable in, pour the Epsom salt and essential oils, leave your phone outside of the bathroom, get in your bath, and close your eyes, breathe in the aromas, and if you’d like, enjoy reading a book for the time you’re in your bath.
3. Make an Appointment
Why is it that we tend to make appointments so regularly for our hair, our nails, our children’s Dr. appointments, but we hesitate to make appointments for our self-care as if we don’t matter? You matter.
4. Herbals for Nervous System
There is something so appealing about drinking hot teas at times when we’re feeling stressed and need calming. The concept alone of drinking tea is soothing. It’s typically a hot drink, so therefore you must sit, slow down, and sip gently.
Some soothing teas to enjoy individually or in blends are chamomile, oatstraw, skullcap, lemon balm, lavender, and peppermint, passion flower (if breastfeeding, skip peppermint and if pregnant skip passion flower). By the way, I get my herbs here.
I will usually make a pot of tea in the morning and let it infuse during the day. When I want a cup, I’ll reheat some and pour myself a cup. I’ve also been known to drink tea at room temperature, but I much prefer it warm.
For children, a quarter cup or half a cup of teas like chamomile and lemon balm can be really soothing. My kids enjoy a warm cup of tea before bedtime each evening after dinner.
All of these teas are calming for the nervous system. And I personally feel that most moms can benefit from always having skullcap, lemon balm, and chamomile at home.
5. Crystals
A crystal is an established batch of molecules or atoms. Cultures have used crystals for thousands of years as a way to transfer energy. When I was a kid in Dominican Republic, crystals, herbs, and energy work was a way of life. Not only are crystals beautiful but they are energetically powerful.
Here are some crystals to have at home.
(This is a good starter kit for home)
Amethyst: keep an amethyst in any room that you’d like to create calming energy and increase your intuition. It’s especially lovely in bedrooms since amethyst are great for reducing anxiety and stress and allowing you to sleep comfortably.
Sugilite: I keep sugilite in my living room and in our bedrooms. It’s protective and purifying and helps overcome feelings of hopelessness.
Selenite: a must-have for your home as it is cleansing and clears negative energy.
Sodalite: I find this crystal so beautiful. It’s one used for opening to our truth, reduces negativity, and enhances positivity. It’s one of the crystals that I use daily during meditation.
Smokey Quartz: so powerful for grounding you and clearing auras and energetic systems.
Ruby: another absolutely beautiful crystal that I love. Powerfully stimulates the root chakra. Want to feel that you’re coming to life? Wear a ruby on your body in some way.
Moonstone: connect to your feminine powers and balance your emotions by keeping a moonstone near by. I highly recommend it in your bedroom.
Rose Quartz: the crystal of love. Opens your heart and ability to love. I recommend it in all living and workspaces.
During stressful and anxiety-filled times, be gentle with yourself. Rely on your inner resources and find them, you are important in caring for yourself during these times.
6. Aromatherapy During Stressful Times
The absolute easiest way to use aromatherapy during stressful times is to simply inhale it. Place a drop or two on a napkin or cotton ball and take slow, gentle, deep breaths for 5-10 minutes.
Quick Healing with Essential Oils
- For quick pick-me-ups, use Lavender, Clary Sage (if pregnant, skip Clary Sage and in general avoid essential oils during the first and second trimester of pregnancy), Eucalyptus, or Lemongrass.
- For grounding, I recommend Vetiver or Sandalwood, as well as Lavender.
- For bringing out your feminine powers and strengths, I love using Ylang Ylang
- To calm anxiety, Cypress, Vetiver, Clary Sage, or Lavender are my go-to essential oils.
Essential Oils for Your Diffuser
Personally, I find using a diffuser (I recommend this one) to be very soothing. I use it daily, starting with the morning, mid-day and into the evening.
- Morning diffuser (any mix or individual) : Lemongrass, Lavender, Clary Sage, Vetiver, Sandalwood as these are grounding, awakening, lively.
- Mid-day diffuser (any mix or individual): Cypress, Eucalyptus, Ylang Ylang, Lemongrass as ways to keep active, productive, and with good feels.
